Definition
Testosterone is the male sex hormone made in the testicles. Testosterone hormone levels are important to male sexual development and functions. During puberty, testosterone helps boys develop male features like facial hair, a deeper voice, and muscle strength. It’s also needed to make sperm. Some men have low testosterone levels, which is called testosterone deficiency syndrome (TD) or low testosterone (low-T).
Low testosterone means the body doesn’t have enough of the testosterone it needs to function the way that it should which can result in:
· Low sex drive
· Fatigue
· Reduced lean muscle mass
· Irritability
· Erective dysfunction
· Depression
Testosterone decreases with age. Levels naturally decline about 1-3% per year after the age of 40. Low testosterone is more common in men who have diabetes or who are overweight. Having one of the symptoms associated with low-T doesn’t necessarily mean you have low testosterone. However, if you start experiencing multiple symptoms you may want to have your doctor check your levels.
Diagnosis begins with a medical history, physical examination and blood work. The good news is that after a diagnosis, there are treatments to help fight low testosterone. If you’re experiencing symptoms don’t be afraid to talk to your doctor so you can work together to find a treatment plan.
